Perfect and Protect your Glowing Skin this Winter

Well that was fast! It’s bye bye summer and hello winter here in Ireland. The weather literally turned overnight at the end of August and September brought a nip with it.

What does this mean for our skin?

Colder climes bring about a few changes for our largest organ. As cool breezes whip moisture away from the surface layers of our skin our sebaceous gland activity also decreases in colder weather. This means our skin not only diminishes in water quicker but that we’re now lacking oil too. This decreases the overall health of our skin, compromising our lipid barrier, our acid mantle and there-fore our protective function.

How we treat our skin changes as we move from season to season. Whilst winter is actually a good time to consider treatments like mild peeling, needling and laser it’s important to protect our lipid barrier in order to prevent water loss and maintain a strong, healthy and hydrated skin.

Here are our top 6 winter picks to protect the skin from both the inside and outside this cold season… brrr!

Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Omegas+

Feed your skin from within. These high-quality fish oils contain the optimal levels of Omega 3 and 6 that your skin needs to stay supple and hydrated during winter. The oils in this capsule are derived from the belly of salmon and mackerel – no cod livers here! When I talk to people about supplementing with Omegas I often use the oil over water analogy. I explain that if you leave a glass of water sitting out for any length that it will start to evaporate. But put a layer of oil over the water and it won’t. Our skin cells are the same! So as you cosy up in central heating this winter or go for walks on crisp days, protect your skin from water loss by upping your omega ante.

Tri-Peptide Complex Avance Moisturiser

You’ll notice we haven’t included any vitamin A products in our winter picks. That’s because we recommend our clients stay on vitamin A all year round. It’s the ‘constant’ in your routine whilst your cleanser or serum might change to meet the needs of your skin seasonally. We just love adding Avance Moisturiser to your routines during winter. Not only do these amazing peptides (Matrixyl 3000, Trylagen and Matrixyl Synthe 6) have amazing anti-ageing properties but this serum also contains hyaluronic acid and squalene. Whilst hyaluronic acid holds 1000 times its own weight in water to plump and hydrate the skin, squalene acts as a waterproof blanket keeping all that plumping moisture beneath the surface where the wind can’t wick it away. Add a pump to your vitamin A am and pm for maximum anti-ageing and moisturising benefits.

Vita-Antioxidant Hydrating Oil Capsules

Hello hydration! Hydrating Oil Capsules contain a powerful blend of antioxidants and vitamin A to soothe and enrich the skin. These are applied over your regular vitamin A product as a night-time boost and leave your skin feeling noticeably different the next morning. By increasing the natural surface oils of your skin Hydrating Oil Capsules increase the barrier protection and immunity of your skin also.

RAD SPF 15

Just because its winter does not mean the need for spf is a distant memory! In case you need convincing, per capita Ireland has the third highest rate of skin cancer in the world. In. The. World. So, if you’re Irish and living in Ireland at any time of the year chances are you actually need spf more than the nationalities of the 192 other countries! Now that you’re convinced its simply a matter of finding one that suits you. Our preferred winter spf to protect our skin in the crispy great outdoors is RAD SPF 15. We love this as it has a thick consistency that’s absorbed well by drier skins. It’s also a physical sunscreen meaning it reflects UV radiation and it contains antioxidants for an anti-ageing boost.

Vita-Complex Super Moisturiser

A comforting moisturising cream that helps relieve dry skin and act as a moisture barrier. Super Moisturiser is a cream we often give to people as a safety blanket. It’s not active and so won’t go off like your vitamin A products so it can sit of your shelf for a bit longer if necessary. This means you can reach for it whenever you need it. We’re more likely to incur retinoid reactions in winter as our sebaceous glands shrink and vitamin A penetrates our skin at a quicker pace. Super Moisturiser will be your best friend if this happens as it will alleviate reactions and strengthen the epidermal barrier function very quickly. If worn daily I love to recommend it at night over your vitamin A product. It’s fab to wear during air travel to keep the skin moisturised or if you work in an air controlled or outdoor environment a lot. For me, this is a must on my shelf. I like to know it’s there and grab it when I need it.

Jane Iredale Glow Time Mineral BB Cream

This four in one product is a Foundation, Concealer, Moisturiser and spf 25 all in one. It offers medium to full coverage with a dewy finish. The key ingredients in this product are apple extract to brighten skin and sunflower oil to intensely nourish. Your skin will feed off this foundation over the winter months as it seals in moisture and prevents water loss. It is a skincare make up so we accept it as a true spf 25 and adorn it with all of the positives a physical spf has to offer.
